Halloween Candy Buyback - A Mom Blog Win

halloween candy
My wife has a journalism degree. I don't, which means I don't understand certain elements of "getting the story." Basically, I can search online and use resources readily available in order to write something. When I had trouble imagining how a local mom blogger could have found all the local places to turn in Halloween candy to be used for distribution to the military, she really couldn't help me figure it out. Some dentists offer cash per pound, and others don't, if that matters to you.

Here's was list offered on jaxmomsblog.com for 2018:
  • Blue Sky Dental Group
14866 Old St. Augustine Road, Suite 111
    Jacksonville, FL 32258
Candy donations accepted from 8am–4pm on November 1; will pay $1/lb.
  • Villa Villekulla Neighborhood Toy Store
    5 South 2nd Street
    Fernandina Beach, FL 32034
From October 27 to November 3, bring new, unopened candy in and receive a 20% discount; one buyback per child.
  • West Dentistry
    2301 Park Street
    Jacksonville, FL 32204
Candy will be collected November 5 and 6, and kids will receive a gift.
  • Kids First Dentistry
    4495 Roosevelt Boulevard, Suite 111
    Jacksonville, FL 32210
Drop off between November 1 and November 8; kids receive $1/lb.
  • Fishman Pediatric Dentistry
    552 Jacksonville Dr
    Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250
Candy can be brought to the office on November 1, 2 or 5. Every pound donated gets an entry into a drawing for a FREE Sonic Care for kids and whitening kit for adults.
  • Bartram Dental Center
    4003 130 Gateway Circle
    St Johns, FL 32259
The office will collect candy through November 8.
  • Seaside Children’s Dentistry
1100-2 S Ponce De Leon Blvd
    Saint Augustine, Florida 32084
Candy will be collected November 1 through the 9. $1 for every pound plus a goody bag with healthy treats! Candy will be donated to troops overseas.
That's a decent list.  You might notice in the links that some are to Facebook pages that list events. Other links go directly to the dentist office. My wife suggested there might be a database of locations from the groups that collect the candy. But when I looked it up that way, I only found one local dentist's office listed. Halloweencandybuyback.com is one such national database that listed a single local dentist for 2018:
Kids First Dentistry
4495 Roosevelt Blvd- Suite 111
Jacksonville, Fl, 32210
Phone: (904) 423-1377
Email: drjm@kids1dentistry.com
kids1dentistry.com

Lesan Family Dentistry and Rooted in Wellness made the local news with their own buyback programs through Operation Gratitude, as reported on jdnews.com:
What: Candy donations for Operation Gratitude drive
When: 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1-2, at Lesan Family Dentistry; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 1-2 and Nov. 5-7 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at Rooted in Wellness
Where: Lesan Family Dentistry is located at 123 Cobia St. in Jacksonville; Rooted in Wellness is located at 200 Doctors Drive, Suite J in Jacksonville
Basically, a local momblog has several times the candy buyback options listed with other databases or news sources. Operation Gratitude's website also listed a couple of offices not found in the jdnews article, including West Dentistry listed above and:

Dopazo Orthodontics
Contact Name
Abe Dopazo
Contact Address
3457 Hendricks Ave, JACKSONVILLE, Florida 32207 United States
Contact: Email
Contact: Phone
(904) 398-6461
What's weird is that the Operation Gratitude website DID NOT list the two in the jdnews article. My wife suggested the local momblogger called a bunch of dentist's offices to find out her information, but there must be hundreds of those around. I guess those offices might also know to contact a momblog website in order to get listed. It's a bit of a mystery to me.

If you are reading this article in 2019, 2020, or later, there's a chance these places are still on the list. What I'll do is update the article or link to a new one if I know more information, but you can always call the offices listed to find out for yourself. Or ask a momblogger.

Obviously, this is a great program to get rid of your candy so your kids don't bounce off the walls until Christmas, and it seemingly helps those who serve our country, even if they're forced to eat tons of Whoppers and suckers for no good reason. Plus, it's good PR for local family dentists.
